Key Learning Areas

square klaThe NSW Board of Studies Teaching and Education Standards (BOSTES) syllabuses state what must be taught in the six key learning areas (KLAs):

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science and Technology
  • Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE) (incorporating History K–6 from 2015)
  • Creative Arts
  • Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE)
  • Religion is also taught as a formal KLA in Catholic Schools as a “seventh” KLA

The K–6 syllabuses are designed to be taught within the Board’s recommended percentages of time for each key learning area in a typical school week.

KEY LEARNING AREA PERCENTAGE OF TIME SPENT ON SUBJECT
English between 25 and 30 per cent
Mathematics 20 per cent
Science and Technology between 6 and 10 per cent
PD/Health/PE between 6 and 10 per cent
Human Society and its Environment between 6 and 10 per cent
Creative Arts between 6 and 10 percent
Religion and additional activities up to 20 per cent
